I saw these really great letters when I was shopping at World Market a few weeks back, and had really wanted to get them. They were a little too pricey for my liking ($89.99) so I left with a loud 'humpffff', a stomping of foot & made my way home.
The next day I was picking up supplies at the craft store and here to my surprise were paper mâché letters! And at half off as well - can you say meant to be!?! I remembered the stack of old atlas maps I'd buried in the garage and a light bulb went off in my head. I dug out some modge podge and got started.
I did the word travel and used maps of places I've always wanted to go. This project would also be super cute for a kids room!
What you'll need:
-Your choice of scrap paper or maps
-An exacto knife
-Scissors
-A marker
-Modge Podge (I used matte finish, but high gloss also looks nice)
-Sponge paint brush
-Paper mâché letters
Lay your letter down on paper, trace an outline.
Cut paper - leave a little extra space when cutting, you can always trim with an exacto knife.
Apply a small amount of modge podge to the letter, mount your paper onto the letter. Smooth out any wrinkles or bubbles with fingers.
- depending on the thickness of your paper you may have to let it dry for a bit before doing the next step.
Apply another layer of modge podge overtop and let dry two hours.
Mount to wall with sticker squares or tape for a floating effect.
Have fun!
